The Croydon and Sutton branch continues to make steady progress, reports branch organizer Charlotte Lewis.
Right now we are experiencing the ‘calm before the storm’, with both the general election and the local elections due to take place next spring (the local elections definitely on 6th May, the general election to be confirmed). They could take place on the same day, which will be a real headache for our activists, but we’re sure they will rise to the occasion.
Leafleting takes place on Saturdays only at the moment, but come next year that will have to be increased firstly to two days per week, then three, then four or five as the big days approach. All our council candidates are in place for Croydon. Sutton is proving to be a more difficult task, but we are confident that as the deadline for nominations approaches, we will have the required number of Sutton candidates in place. As for the parliamentary candidates, we have five ready to stand. Of our five constituencies, we will definitely be contesting three (Croydon Central, Carshalton & Wallington and Sutton & Cheam), and of the other two – one is a probable (Croydon South – where the incumbent Tory MP was heavily embroiled in the expenses scandal) and the other a possible. The possible is Croydon North, where native Brits are very much in the minority, but if we have sufficient finances then we would love to give the long-suffering indiginous minority a chance to vote BNP.
Our next branch meeting will be on Wednesday 28th October. The guest speaker will be Tim Raitt, he’s the one who beat Labour when he stood for our party in the Henley parliamentary by-election.
